Meals offer much-needed hospitality at the end of a long day at the hospital. You can show support by providing a meal for 45-50 people. Use our online calendar to learn more and sign up.  Groups of up to 8 volunteers may prepare and serve meals in the Family House kitchen.  Or, individuals, families, and groups may prepare food offsite and drop it off by 4:45. If the food is not already individually packaged, we ask that volunteers limit dinners to 1 entree, 1 side, and 1 dessert (rather than a potluck-style with lots of different options). This will simplify the process of serving the food at the Family House. All food that is dropped off needs to be in disposable containers. Examples of menus: individually wrapped club sandwiches, small bags of chips, and individually-wrapped brownies. pans of chicken casserole, pans of green beans, and a sheet cake pans of sliced ham, pans of mac & cheese, and pans of blueberry cobbler

Spiritual Care Volunteers provide emotional and spiritual support to guests at the Family House. Coming from a variety of faith traditions and spiritual backgrounds, these volunteers provide counseling, comfort, and a listening presence to patients and caregivers who are facing illness and health crises. 

Responsibilities:

Listen to guests' stories. Respond to requests for individual and group prayer. Consider creative ways to offer additional spiritual support through worship opportunities and meaningful rituals. Facilitate connections with hospital chaplains as well as faith leaders from guests' home communities. Contribute resources and materials to the Family House's chapel for spiritual support. Pray regularly for the prayer requests that are recorded in the prayer journal in the Family House's chapel. Provide a caring presence to people of all faiths and people of no faith.

Spiritual Care Volunteers come to the Family House for 2-hour shifts, 5:00-7:00pm, Sunday-Thursday. The Family House is at its busiest during the evenings, when caregivers and patients are often winding down after spending their days at local hospitals. Any spiritual care needs beyond these evening hours are directed to on-call chaplains at the local hospitals. 

Spiritual Care Volunteers report to the Volunteer & Community Outreach Manager.

Qualifications and Requirements:

To be considered as a Spiritual Care Volunteer, applicants must: 

Be at least 21 years old. Have completed at least one unit of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) or equivalent. Complete a Family House volunteer profile and volunteer application. Pass a background check. Complete an in-person interview. Complete volunteer orientation. Adhere to the Family House's volunteer policies, including our confidentiality agreement. Commit not to proselytize. Be approved by the Volunteer & Community Outreach Manager.

Once approved, Spiritual Care Volunteers may register directly through the volunteer management system for the days/shifts that are convenient with their schedules. Some Spiritual Care Volunteers may commit to coming once a week, others to coming every other week, and others to coming once a month or as their schedules permit. Spiritual care volunteers may consider coming for two nights in a row.

Anything you use in your home, we use in ours! Just multiply it by A LOT. :)

Brighten people's day by playing the piano, playing another instrument, or singing in the Family House living room!

Musicians usually play from about 5:45-6:15. Nights of the week are flexible.

Dinners have become an important part of the hospitality of the SECU Family House, which provides support to people who are away from home for medical care. 

Dinner Hosts get the kitchen ready for dinner, put food into individual containers, and make sure Family House guests have what they need as they come through the kitchen.

When groups come to the Family House kitchen to prepare meals on site, Dinner Hosts greet groups, orient them to the kitchen and to safety protocols, and answer questions.

Dinner Hosts may commit to coming on a regular schedule, once a week or once every other week, or come when available.

Interested volunteers need to register through the Family House website: www.familyhousews.org/volunteer. After registering and completing a volunteer profile, the Family House's volunteer coordinator will contact you to discuss details.

Welcome Bags provide a wonderful gesture of hospitality when our guests arrive at the Family House! They remind guests that they're loved and supported by our community, and they provide practical things that guests can enjoy during long waits in the hospitals and waiting rooms. 

In order to manage the number of bags coming into the Family House, we ask that volunteers register online at https://www.familyhousews.org/volunteer/.

Here are some helpful guidelines:

* Recommended bag size: 8x10 gift bags (which can be decorated!)
* Examples of items to include: Think about the items you take with you on a road trip. At this time, please do not include children's items. Please do not include food.

* Hour value: 10 bags = 1 hour of volunteer service (if you're recording your hours)

* Hour value: 10 bags = 1 hour of volunteer service (if you're recording your hours)
* Please drop these off on the Monday when you've signed up, anytime between 10:00-6:00.

Here are some helpful guidelines:

Examples of goodies include cookies, brownies, slices of cake, and bags of trail mix. Goodies must be packaged in individual grab-and-go sizes (for example, 2 cookies in one ziplock bag or 1 cup of trail mix in one ziplock bag). Please include the date on the bag. Please indicate if the item contains nuts.

Maintenance Volunteers assist with preventative maintenance tasks in vacant rooms and common spaces. Tasks may include:

Cleaning PTAC covers Cleaning bathroom vent fans Cleaning ceiling fan blades Change bulbs as needed Test smoke detectors and emergency lights monthly

Volunteers are asked to commit to a regular schedule (weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly) for at least 2 months. Flexible 2-3 hour shifts.

Our laundry volunteers help us keep our sheets and towels clean, folded, and ready to go. Tasks include:

Fold towels and bed linens to restock shelves Wipe down machines Sweep and mop laundry and storage area Check supplies and let staff know if anything is running low

Laundry volunteers are asked to commit to a regular shift, once a week or every other week for at least 2 months. Flexible 2-3 hour shifts.

Our Kitchen Volunteers focus on the kitchen! They are involved in the following tasks:

Check refrigerators for food that needs to be re-packaged/discarded/labeled  Individually package bulk snacks/cookies/chips to put on island  Check inventories of staple items and let staff know if anything is running low (milk, eggs, breads, butter, cream cheese, coffee supplies)  Check paper good and plastic ware inventories. Restock as needed and inform staff if we are getting low Wipe down and sanitize countertops, cabinets, and tables 

We ask Kitchen Volunteers to commit to a regular shift once a week or once every other week for at least 2 months. Flexible 2-3 hour shifts.
