Joy Prom Winston-Salem is a full-scale, annual prom for the special needs individuals and those with disabilities in our community. Established in 2015, we welcome guests ages 16+, with any physical, developmental, or intellectual "different ability!"

The Host/ Hostess is the most relational (and needed!) role at Joy Prom. Each guest that comes to Joy Prom is paired with a Host/Hostess that accompanies them throughout the evening.

Host/Hostess guide the guests to the different activities of the evening; remains with the guest at each activity and never leaves the guest alone. Host/ Hostess ensure the guest is enjoying the activities of the guest's choice. The Hostess remains with the guest until the guest is reunited with their parent/caretaker at the end of the evening. 

Host/Hostess who are 18+ require a background check within the past 12 months. The approx cost of the background check is $20.00.

We ask the volunteers to cover the cost of your background check to help ensure Joy Prom is a safe experience for guests and volunteers. Joy Prom is a volunteer-run initiative and this event is entirely funded through donations. If cost is a barrier to you, please email info@joypromwinston.org and simply decline to cover the cost when completing your background check.

This is a wonderful family service opportunity!!! 

NOTE:  If you are coming as a family or as part of a group, please register using the "respond as team" on the registration form.  You can just use your last name or whatever as the team name (it doesn't matter what you decide to use for the team name) and then register yourself and then add other volunteers that will be coming as well so that we can make sure to have a name badge made for everyone who will be there. 

PLEASE READ ALL OF THE INFORMATION BELOW REGARDING VOLUNTEERS AGE 5-13 *PRIOR* TO REGISTERING TO VOLUNTEER FOR THIS OPPORTUNITY.

Volunteers ages 5 to 13 are welcome to join us for this volunteer opportunity ONLY.Volunteers ages 5 to 13 MUST be accompanied by a parent or guardian for the ENTIRE time they are on site at the stadium. Please remember that our guests are the star of the evening and all attention should be solely focused on the guest.Please note, while this opportunity states ages 5 to 13 as appropriate ages to volunteer, please note that any children that volunteer for this event are expected to be able to follow directions and stay behind the ropes going down the red carpet.  If your child is prone to having melt downs, running away from their caregiver, yelling at inappropriate times, or simply not acting in a manner that is appropriate for the decorum of this event, etc, this is not the best opportunity for them to volunteer for.  Any person (adult or child) that behaves in a manner that is inappropriate or distracts from our guests will be asked to leave.  Historically this area is livestreamed on WXII's Facebook page. Appropriate behavior and attire are especially important in this area during this time.  All volunteers, regardless of age, are expected to dress appropriately (clean & neat) for this event.   Volunteers are welcome to wear cocktail or formal attire if they would like but are not required to.  Women/girls should wear at minimum a dress or nice pants and a blouse.  Men/boys are asked to please wear a collared shirt (a tie is optional but is always nice looking!) and slacks. PLEASE NO JEANS OR T-SHIRTS.Once the final guest has walked down the red carpet, unless volunteers have made arrangements to work in another area, the red carpet cheering crowd is asked to leave.  NO CHILDREN are allowed on the dance floor or to be walking through the venue at any time during the event. If you have questions regarding this opportunity, please contact Shelley Hundley at 803-238-5431.

Joy Prom Winston-Salem is a full-scale, annual prom for the special needs individuals and those with disabilities in our community. Established in 2015, we welcome guests ages 16+, with any physical, developmental, or intellectual "different ability!" Joy Prom is more than a dance or one night event. Joy Prom is a celebration of unity through an outpouring of love and acceptance for our guests.

The Red Carpet Cheering Crowd  cheer for our guests and make them feel like the "Stars" they are as they walk down the red carpet. Cheering consists of clapping , waving and cheering words of encouragement. Cheering begins once the guest name is announced and the guest begins walking the runway. The announcer will let you know if the guest requested a silent cheer. A silent cheer is just waving, no clapping or cheers. 

This opportunity typically takes approximately 2 hours.

You are asked to arrive at 5:00PM in order to have time to check in at the volunteer check-in station and then take your place along the red carpet no later than 5:30 PM. Red carpet historically has opened 5-10 minutes prior to the published time and all who are volunteering for the red carpet cheering crowd must be ready once the event begins.

All volunteers are required to wear a volunteer badge.

You will receive more detailed information the week prior to the event. Shelley, Joy Prom Executive Director, or one of the leaders for that area will provide last minutes details to the volunteers just prior to the first guest walking the red carpet.

This is a wonderful family service opportunity!!!

Volunteers ages 5 to 13 are welcome to join us for this volunteer opportunity.

Walking the red carpet is one of the highlights for they guests ! They love this time and hearing all the cheers from their fans.

Volunteers may help with General Set Up, Dining Room Set Up, Set Up Glitz & Glamour, Decorations, Hanging Signage, Parking Signage, Etc.

Dining Room & Food Prep helps make sure all the food is prepared and stocked so that our guests have plenty of food and drink for the evening. Serve and assist in food service at guest food stations, refill drinks, clear tables, man water stations, etc.

Tear down will promptly begin at 9:30 and will finish upon completion (hopefully by 11 or 11:30).
