What do Disaster Services Caseworker volunteers do?

In the period following a life-changing disaster, our clients can depend on Red Cross caseworkers to call them to ask, “are you doing okay?”, guide them through their recovery planning, and refer them to the community organizations that can help meet their particular needs. Caseworkers may also offer additional ARC resources, including Red Cross Health Services, Disaster Mental Health Services, Service to Armed Forces assistance, and upon request, caseworker advocacy for certain situations.

Time requirements

  • Casework offers a flexible schedule and the option to work from home
  • Alternatively, caseworkers may choose to have a set schedule in an office setting
  • Caseworkers may choose to work with clients as needed during the workday or, if it better fits their lifestyles and schedules, early evenings and weekends instead
  • As a part of the Piedmont Triad Casework and Recovery Team, casework volunteers work together to share the caseload with the aim of achieving the caseload size that is ideal for each member

Training

  • Web-based training courses are necessary
  • Followed by 2-3 sessions of in person, one on one, hands on learning
  • And the close support of a casework mentor through the intricacies of the first several weeks of independent cases

Skills and qualities of a caseworker

  • Demonstrated commitment to the mission of the American Red Cross
  • Strong client focus
  • Kindness, compassion, and resourcefulness
  • Ability to work well as a member of a team
  • A sense of urgency and an awareness of the need to provide clients with timely assistance
  • Interest in learning about community resource organizations
  • Recognition of the value of different perspectives and cultures
  • Basic data entry and computer skills
  • Knowledge of the recovery process and ARC casework standards and procedures, as taught during caseworker training
