Celebrate National Volunteer Week by assembling Summer Enrichment Packs for Children at United Way of Greater Greensboro. These packs provide an opportunity for continued educational learning during the summer months when many children remain at home with a limited structured learning environment. Provides caregivers supplies needed to continue to build foundational skills critical for maintaining grade-level knowledge and skills, which disproportionately affects low-income students. The premise of Raising A Reader is to encourage caregiver/child bonding; by providing supplies for activities, we are continuing to provide learning and bonding opportunities after the book rotations have ended during their school year, which, in effect, can close the achievement gap for low-income families.
Summer learning loss is a term coined for students entering the school year at a lower level than they were at the beginning of the summer, which disproportionately affects low-income and marginalized communities. The discontinuation of available resources (crayons, extra paper, markers) contributes to a loss of learning over the summer. Activity packets encourage caregivers to facilitate the necessary activities to promote continued skill building and learning, especially for the low-income students entering kindergarten.
