Come hear how we can navigate political and cultural polarization with grace and nuance. Dr. Shirley Mullen was Houghton University’s fifth president from 2006-2021. She’s the author of Claiming the Courageous Middle: Daring to Live and Work Together for a More Hopeful Future. She became fascinated with how certain Christian individuals and groups were maneuvering difficult conversations or issues and not just defaulting to “choosing a side.” She speaks of this work as “translating one’s principles into practice” and how it requires “creativity, imagination, and attention to the particularity of the circumstances.” Modern life does not attend to these things, and her book makes the case that the way forward requires courage and living in a “middle space.”
